"Speech Pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speech, language, fluency and voice" - Speech Pathology Australia
The scope of a speech pathologist role is extraordinarily broad and includes supporting those with difficulties in speech production, speaking in sentences, listening and understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by a speech pathologist.
Speech Pathologists can work with children and adults who have difficulty communicating for a range of reasons including developmental delays, learning disability, intellectual disability, brain injuries including stroke, dementia, and hearing loss, as well as other difficulties that can affect speech and language.
Speech refers to how sounds are produced. We can assess for speech sound delays and disorders and provide therapy using a range of up to date evidence based practice.
A broad concept referring to both the use and understanding of language. We can support with difficulties from following instructions or understand what has been said to developing vocabulary and speaking in sentences including putting ideas in sequential order.
Voice Therapy is a specialised area of Speech Pathology and one of interest for our Speech Pathologist, Sharna. Sharna is able to provide support to those with degenerative conditions, hyperfunctional (overuse) voice disorders, vocal cord paralysis and general preventative and vocal fold health to professional voice users.
Children learn through play, though sometimes we need to teach them how to play! Baisie can support parents and caregivers in play interactions, developing a language enriched environment and teaching engagement and turn taking. We can even provide parent programs such as Hanen - It Takes Two to Talk.
Baisie Therapy Services clinicians are broadly experienced including working within the Disability and Early Intervention Sector before, during and post the NDIS role out. Our team of Speech Pathologists are experienced in Alternate and Augmentative Communication (AAC), Early Intervention, Global Developmental Delay, Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy and Intellectual Disability.
Baisie Therapy Services is always taking part in opportunities to share information, upskill on the current evidence based practices and share resources through formal and informal networking channels. Baisie regularly hosts speech pathology student placements and is available to take volunteer and school based experiences. Baisie is available to provide workplace workshops about various Speech Pathology scopes of practice.
Occupational Therapists help children develop the skills they need to participate in daily life
Occupational Therapists work across a large scope based on the individual person's functional goals to "achieve optimal health and wellbeing through participation in the occupations of life" - Occupational Therapy Australia. These activities include taking care of oneself (and others), working, volunteering, and participating in hobbies, interests and social events.
Occupational Therapists can work with adults, children and families to help them successfully participate in the activities they find meaningful i.e. their interests, jobs or daily self-care tasks. Occupational Therapists can work with children with developmental delays, ADHD, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and more.
Baisie's Allied Health Assistants (AHA) work under the supervision of our Speech Pathologists to provide individualised programs specifically designed for each client based on their personalised goals to meet therapy outcomes. The benefit of working with AHA's is that often there is capacity to provide more regular and intensive service delivery in a highly cost efficient manner.
Sessions with an AHA start with a joint session with both the Speech Pathologist and AHA with the family to review goals and set the program. Once established the AHA and Speech Pathologist meet each week to review the client program and adjust accordingly. To meet an ever growing need for speech pathology intervention, our AHA model in provided rotationally with home programs, that is 1:1 weekly one term, home program the next term, returning to 1:1 with reviews with the speech pathologist between.
